I love my morning coffee and though it often gets a bad reputation for being bad for your health, I believe that one good, organic cup of coffee a day is actually good for your health.
Coffee has many health benefits. It is high in antioxidants and has been shown to reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes as well as dementia and Alzheimer’s. It’s not the coffee that is bad for you; it’s what we’ve done to it that makes it bad for you.
Like most foods, we have found a way to make coffee cheap, accessible and convenient. This often comes at the risk of adding pesticides and other chemicals that are bad for you. But you can maximize the taste and health benefits by reducing the toxins simply by buying a French Press.
A French Press is the best way to make coffee. If you make your own coffee, you can buy a sustainable, organic coffee that is free from pesticides and other toxins that can be bad for your health. Commercial coffee houses have been known to add chemicals to the coffee to make it taste better so skip the drive thru and make it yourself. To further increase the health benefits, drink it black. It can take some getting used to, but I managed to cut out the milk and sugar I added to my coffee every morning and now save it for an occasional weekend treat.
The French Press also reduces your exposure to BPA, a harmful chemical that leaches out of the plastics that invariably make up a large component of traditional coffee makers. BPA has been associated with hormonal disruption, reduced fertility, increased miscarriages, type 2 diabetes, male impotence, heart disease in women and a variety of other illnesses. Since French Presses are made predominantly of stainless steel, as long as you choose a glass one, you reduce your exposure to this chemical.
And of course, the French Press creates less waste. Though the new pods and cups are convenient, they are an environmental nightmare. Not to mention, more plastic!
Of course, you want to keep using a filtered brewing process if your cholesterol is high, but otherwise, get a French Press. Your body will thank you, and so will the environment!
